HISTORY IN THE MAKING

THE HOLY GRAIL OF HYBRIDS

Ken Grigg, Dagenham & District and IOA member has achieved the Holy Grail of the British Bird, Mule & Hybrid world by breeding a Siskin x Bullfinch.

Some people may say how lucky this achievement is, but this is no accident or a lucky coincidence, Ken has tried this pairing for over 30 years.

Talking from his home in Kent with his wife Jean, he said year after year he has set out his breeding plans for the bird room but he has had around 400 clear eggs from this pairing. Now, he has defied the odds and produced this stunning specimen.

Ken is no stranger to success, only last year he was given the Order of Merit Award from the IOA, he is only one of twelve of the Greatest birdmen in the country to receive such an honour.

He has been a breeder for over 60 years and has been the General Secretary of the Southern Norwich Plain Head Club for over 40 years, also he has been an OMJ judge since the 80s. He has competed & judged in many countries, also winning gold medals at the World Show.

The list of his many great achievements goes on, but many of us know Ken at the grass roots level of this hobby. At Dagenham & District Cage Bird Society, Ken mucks in with helping at shows and meetings and always has a kind word of encouragement or advice for Members young and old.

If ever there was a story of not giving up this would be it. Going through 30 years of disappointment and crushed plans and dreams to finally succeed, where so many have tried and failed, is testament to the man and our great hobby.

CONGRATULATIONS KEN AND SO VERY WELL DESERVED!

TROPHY HOARD DISCOVERED

The history of our Club has taken another leap into the present with the discovery of a lost hoard of trophies that were awarded by the Club in days gone by.

We believe these fantastic trophies were used between the 1950's and  1990, and three in particular are memorial trophies for longstanding Members - Bill Creamer, Ted Chester and V Keen.

If anyone is able to shed any further light on these Members or any other information about the trophies please contact us. These are our roots and the reason why this Club has had the longevity that it has. (February 2020)

OPEN SHOW 2019 NEWS -

COURTESY OF THE BARKING & DAGENHAM POST

"A caged bird society still going strong after almost 85 years has held its biggest show of the season. Wantz Community Centre in Webbscroft Road, Dagenham, was filled with the sound of cheeping and chirping as members of Dagenham and District Caged Bird Society vied for top prize at the club's annual show.

In total, 36 people entered 366 birds including greenfinches, bullfinches, siskins and canaries with best in show scooped by a frisky goldfinch. Pete Decourt, the society's president and treasurer, said: "The show is the biggest of the season. It's been hard work to organise, but it's been a very nice day. We always get a good turnout."

The society started in 1935 and while other clubs have closed, Dagenham's is still going strong with 80 members aged from 12 upwards. Dagenham's club has survived so long because of the camaraderie among members who love the hobby, Pete added.

But with £2,000 prize money, feathers can get ruffled. "It gets very competitive. But most people show for the love of it," the 76-year old said. Bill and Steve Wallace, who picked up the hobby in childhood, won best mule and best hybrid. A thrilled Steve said: "This is what you get out for the hard work you put in." But there's no secret to success, according to club secretary Richard Wilson. "It's just pairing up two good quality birds to produce the right bird," he said. Something which the best in show prizewinner, Walter Scott, knows well after taking up the hobby inspired by his dad, John, who sadly passed away eight weeks before the show. "I'm over the moon, I didn't expect it. It's the first time I've won best in show," he said. And granddaughter, Angel Keenan, 12, is continuing the family tradition with her own black hooded siskin scooping best juvenile foreign bird in show.

Pete, who has enjoyed the hobby for 65 years, said nowadays most caged birds are domesticated with some species such as canaries unable to look after themselves in the wild. British birds have to be bred in captivity and ringed in line with government regulations with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs keeping an eye on things. The club meets the third Saturday of the month. For more visitdagenhamcbs.com or call Richard on 07852 959447."

DAGENHAM & DISTRICT CAGE BIRDS SOCIETY ARE MOVING!

The Club meeting to be held on 21st July 2017 will be the Club's last meeting at the Heath Park Community Hall. Due to difficulties arising from working with the management company of the hall, the decision has been made (by the Committee and Members) to take up the very good offer made by the Wantz Hall, Dagenham. This is a sad outcome after more than 50 years at the same venue but we feel it is the right and positive decision. It has also been decided to change the day of our future meetings to Saturdays from 10am to 12pm which has the advantage of not taking our birds out at night time and we hope may encourage new Members who may find evening meetings difficult.

The Wantz Hall Management Committee are being very helpful and enthusiastic about working with us. They have offered us the use of the main hall and adjacent meeting rooms as well as providing a brick build storage shed for our show staging and lockable facilities in the kitchen, all for less rent than at Heath Park.

Our first meeting at the Wantz Hall will be on Saturday, 19th August, 2017 at 10am.

Congratulations to Fred Thorn!

Here he is pictured after winning the first show in our Club League - The Cock Birds competition. Fred won with a Scottish Fancy Canary, winning a rosette and £20 prize money. Fred is a new member, so well done Fred. Is this a sign that the League isn't going to be dominated by the British Bird keepers this year???

CLUB PROTESTS AT RENT HIKE

The Barking & Dagenham Post reported on the Club Members' protest at the doubling of hourly hire charges for the meeting hall at Heath Park this week (Wednesday, 15th March edition). The Members contested the management company's comments that they hads been informed of the impending rise and that they had not had an opportunity to be consulted or appeal. Richard Wilson (Club Secretary) has raised concerns on behalf of the Club with Barking & Dagenham Council that they and other community users of the hall are being 'priced out' and many may have to close down. The Post is supporting the Club because in their opinion the local Authority is not responding appropriately to community enquiries or needs.

UPDATE - As at publication of our April 2017 newsletter, Barking & Dagenham Council are showing no interest in this issue and state that it is up to the Heath Park Community Halls (HPCH) managment to set the charges for hall hire. We are getting some support from the Barking & Dagenham Post (as above article indicates) as they are currently highlighting general concerns over the Authorities communications and support for various groups of service users. The Wantz Hall, Dagenham has contacted us offering space at their venue but our rent to HPCH is fully paid for this year but this may be an option to consider for the future.

Congratulations to the winner, Richard Wilson and runners up, Steve Wallis and Mick Macathy (second and third place respectively)! So come on you Canary men lets see what you can do next year to make the League Shows even better.

Thank you to all the participants and judges and to all Club members who have supported the events.

May 2016 Meeting - Members Panel Evening

The panel of Phil Heath, Linda O'Malley and Colin Cummings did a fantastic job of giving members details of what birds they keep and how they do it. Unfortunately although Paul Cimbruzzi had volunteered to be on the panel, he was unwell and so could not attend. Thank you for all the interesting information provided. Unfortunately, due to work and personal commitments, James Bavister has resigned as Club Secretary. On behalf of all the members, we thank James for his commitmentment and hard work during his time as Secretary.

Bring & Buy Sale - 15th April, 2016

Next meeting on 15th April is Dagenham CBS Bring & Buy Sale.

Can all members please bring along any used bird equipment or birds which they would like to find a good home for the Bring & Buy sale. All sales will have a 10% donation fee towards the club or if you’re feeling really generous why not donate more.

Please try to keep your items bird related or at the very least desirable items in good condition.

Items NOT wanted - Old puzzles, games, clothes, broken bird equipment, non-working electricals, books, comics and brick & brac.

Items Wanted - BIRDS – If you have just done your final selection then bring in your excess birds, cages and equipment. If you are bringing birds, please let Peter De Cort know in advance as once this has been advertised in Cage & Aviary Peter gets a lot of calls asking if there will be birds for sale on the night.

ALL BRITISH BIRDS MUST HAVE LEGAL CLOSED RINGS.

As always members are welcome to bring a family member or friend, or give an old member a call and see if they would like to re-join the club. There will be the usual chat and banter and of course the best tea and cake in Essex supplied by Brett & Dicks Tea Bar.

Again, there will be some fantastic prizes in our raffle, so please make the effort and come and support your club.

If you have not paid your yearly membership it is due now.

Congratulations to Steve Wallis!

Here he is pictured with his Goldfinch Mule, winner of our Cock Show held on 18th March, 2016. Congratulations Steve and best of luck in our future competitions.

Friday 18th March 2016

The Cock Show is the first of three shows that make up the Dagenham CBS Show League, each member can show up to six birds, the Judge places the birds from first to last position, so if there are 30 birds in the show, the first placed bird will get 30 points, the second will get 29 points, third 28 points down to the last bird which gets 1 point. So the member receives points for each of the birds they show which then goes on to create the League table.

Second show is the Pairs Show in September and the third is the Any Bird show in October, the winner of each show gets £20 + Rosette and the winner of the League gets £100 + cup (to be returned each year) + trophy, runner up gets £50 + trophy, third place gets £25 + trophy.

You can join the club on the night (this Friday) and show your birds or just come and have a look, chat or a cuppa, great raffle prizes every month.
